Spring Clean Up: How To Clean Custom Draperies & Pillows
With spring in full bloom, Spring Cleaning seems to be on the brain. I get lots of questions about how to clean and take care of some of your finer custom items – particularly draperies and pillows…so here’s a little “elbow grease guidance.”
So - how DO you take care of custom items for which you spent important budget dollars? - particularly those custom drapes and pillows? Short answer: With great care and thought or you can easily ruin them.
On the whole, and unlike apparel textiles, home furnishing fabrics are not designed to withstand laundering. The issues here are shrinkage and color fastness. All cleaning solutions do contain a variety of harsh detergents. In fact, what you consider a harmless hand soap will leave a film. Furthermore, certain fibers – rayon and silk in particular– should never be exposed to water. So what do you do to care for your custom pillows or draperies?
Pillows
Always best to spot clean these with a damp white cloth as soon as a stain occurs. HOWEVER – always first test the fabric with a white rag near a corner to see if any color from the cloth comes off on your rag. If it does, STOP! You do not have a colorfast fabric on your hands and need to call in a pro. The best way to clean custom pillows is to vacuum them each week with a clean vac wand attachment. This will remove dust and debris and should greatly prolong their life.Draperies
Under no circumstances should draperies ever, ever be dry cleaned or laundered. Remember - custom window treatments have a face fabric (the fabric you see), as well as interlining AND lining fabrics. That's 3 layers of fabric in total. So it will make sense to you when I say that if laundered, linings, interlinings and face fabrics will shrink at different rates and the result will be a disastrously ruined treatment that no workroom can repair. Recommended care for all draperies is always the same: vacuum in order to remove dust and debris. Do not touch draperies when opening and closing; instead use drapery wands which I always specify on my draperies. If you must touch your draperies to primp them, move them to vacuum, etc., do so only with well washed and very dry hands. Our skin contains natural oils – not to mention the residue that is left from hand lotions and facial moisturizers we applied earlier in the day. These can and will harm sensitive home textile fabrics.The take away? Take care when “taking care” of your fine custom draperies and pillows and they will return to you endless hours, days, months and years of great beauty.

The B-Word. And Design
No – not THAT “B-word.” Let's keep this clean. BUDGET. That’s the B-word I’m talking about. BUDGET.
I always approach the topic of BUDGET very delicately with a new client. People get very funny talking about money. They may have been taught that “it” is not discussed; they may fear that I am trying to judge them, size them up, look them over or worse – work them over!
Not so, not so, not so.
The thing of it is this: Budget drives design. And it's as much a part of the process as paint chips and fabric swatches, and you wouldn’t be embarrassed to discuss those things. Budget must be viewed in the same way. Budget is king because it will direct and drive every single design decision made in a project. Always.
The scariest words I ever hear from a new client are “We Have No Budget.” Those are the clients that I know will be the 1st to have sticker shock and either panic, shut down, or run. They will waste design time and design dollars because they will be searching the wrong venues. They will be highly unfocused and will be unable to make decisions. They will drive up their design time, and drive down the prudent use of their time.
Why does a designer – and you – need to know your budget? Very simply: So we can design TO your budget, not above it. By knowing budget, I know how to guide to best advantage to get the most power out of that budget. Furthermore, by knowing a client’s budget, I know what their expectation is regarding quality of goods. I will not suggest Raymour and Flanigan to the client who really is expecting a custom 8-way-hand-tied sofa in a fine fabric or upper end silhouette or color. I will not suggest a mid price point resource to the client who is looking for an entry level price point retailer. Making the wrong recommendation in any of these scenarios would have disastrous results, to include completely breaking down efficiency – and worse – destroying trust and faith – from client to designer.
My final words on budget can be borrowed with a bit of a twist from my favorite, Will Shakespeare:
“Budget” is neither good nor bad,
But thinking that makes it so.
Budget isn’t good. Budget isn’t bad. Budget is just a thing. Like a paint chip. Let it go. Breathe. Make a budget decision – don’t judge it nor expect anybody else to either. Just let it be. Do this, and watch your design wishes fall in line – Bingo. Another great B-word!

Ethereal Rug Floor Design
This dazzlingly beautiful rug is from Top Floor, a multi-award winning design studio based in London. The firm, founded in 1988 by Design Director Esti Barnes, is located at the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre.
Striped Floor Design
Check out the eye-popping floor design made from vinyl tape by Glasgow-based artist Jim Lambie. The floor is in the Gramercy apartment that is the home of Tim Nye of the Nyehaus Gallery.
Mare Floors Design
Mare Floors GmbH, a German-based large format printer, used its UltraVu® 2600 to print a vibrantly colored and unusual underwater floor design for leading Madrid advertising agency, Estudio Cruz. The floor was installed by first applying a plastic layer to the existing concrete, and then bonding the self-adhesive vinyl graphics to the base-layer. Glass beads and crystals were adhered to the printed image and a matte covering was overlayed. The final touch was the installment of a special hard-wearing transparent film that helped to create a look of shimmering water.

Simply Floor Design
This floor design is made up of alternating 5-inch-wide and 7-inch-wide planks. The full width of the 5-inch-wide boards is painted green. The 7-inch-wide boards are painted with narrow green stripes. If needed, adjust the pattern measurements to fit the boards of your floor. Use each plank as one unit of width instead of following the measurement. On all other floors, simply mark the pattern as shown.
