Design Concept: Light + Air Door

The Light + Air door is designed to enhance cross ventilation without giving up any security or light. Slide a lever to the right, and the circular openings are exposed—not big enough for anyone to stick a hand in and open the door, but large enough to let the sunshine and fresh air pass through.

Who wants to live without air-conditioning if there is poor ventilation? The Light + Air Door design concept is an answer to that pressing and probably upcoming problem: how do you stay comfortable when it costs $2000 a month to keep your abode cool? Just don't install this door if you live in a submarine. – Charlie WhiteSource URL: https://interiordesignq.blogspot.com/2011/01/

Toilet to inspire Yoga

This is a coincidence. Just recently I remember telling a friend to do Yoga in the toilet if he didn’t find a better spot at home! What do you know, students at Arizona State University's College of Design led by faculty members John Takamura and Dosun Shin have come up with a "transgenerational toilet design concept" called Go With the Flo. The Flo toilet is an ergonomic and designers say that using the Flo toilet is akin to yoga - by building and strengthening abdominal and back muscles. Only one-half to one gallon of water is used for flushing and The Flo reuses water from hand washing. To flush water from the tanks to the toilet, the Flo employs an electromagnetic ball valve. Go With the Flo also is free of mechanical parts. The toilet is fully self-sustaining and independent of electric power.

Design Tips for Organizing Home so You Feel Lighter

Cabin Fever is running high out here in the suburbs of Philadelphia.  Every design client is complaining about feeling cooped up, having cabin fever or just feeling blah as the snow piles up outside.  What a great time to pay attention to an another important part of our interiors....our interiors INTERIORS. Our closets and drawers.

As a design professional, I serve a wide cross section of people, working in a wide range of styles.  But I'm here to tell you that no matter the design style you prefer - excellent designed interiors must not only look great - they must function superbly. That includes...the way we store things.

Watch your enjoyment of your spaces improve exponentially when those same interiors function seamlessly - when perfectly functioning storage helps to make our interiors just "feel and flow right."  As a designer, I always think function and storage when I work with my clients - whether we're working on a dream kitchen or bath, the perfect master bedroom retreat or a luxury home office.  And so I offer these organizational design tips to you for organizing your home. Use them and you can feel lighter, think and function more clearly - and enjoy your home more deeply.

    1. Cull Down Closet Clutter. Yes, always start in the closets first. You can't clear the clutter from counters, tables and chairs if you have no place to put things. Be brutal. Give it away or throw it out if its been unused for 2 years. Nobody wants your old Parcheesi set. Overall rule of thumb for closets: they are spelled
'c l o s e t'  not  'g a r b a g e   d u m p.'  Too often, we cram closets as if they were trash cans. Closets are meant to hold our useful and important items. They are not black holes.

    2. Drain the Drawers. After closets are done, distill and par down drawers so they are not stuffed. If you can't access what you need in a drawer quickly and easily....or file things away with equal ease, you are creating a 'frustration spot' in your home.  You're investing time and dollars to beautify your home with design...be sure to 'beautify' its storage, function and thus ease too.

    3. Strategize Storage. Part of great art of interior design is the ideal use and function of a space. Use design to support organization so that you design your storage so things are stored WHERE you use them. Don't store the candles and matches in the living room if you most often use them in the family room. Keep necessary items in or very near the area where they are used. You'll love the feeling of 'flow..."

    4. Stop saving for a rainy day. How many colanders does a woman really need I ask you. Don't clutter up much-needed-kitchen-cabinet storage with 29 mismatched mugs. (When was the last time you served hot beverages to 29 people?) Planning to do a kitchen or bath reno ? This is the perfect time to distill, edit, par down, give away or toss.

    5. Say Uncle. Sometimes, you just can't do it on your own...savers, this means you. If you find you are waiving the decluttering white flag...call in a pro. Most professional home organizers can blow through in a few hours what could take you a day or more to do. For $35-$50 dollars an hour - you'll get a good value and fine price to pay in exchange for your renewed peace of mind and space on the home front.

Release that old clutter and you may well find that as you clear out...you feel cleared up.

2011 Design Style and Accessory Trend Forecast - Part II

Welcome to part II of the Trend forecast from Interiors by Donna Hoffman. If you missed part I, click here.

Interior design clients who work with me here in the Philadelphia suburbs or in Princeton NJ all ask me about trends. I know that interior design clients are thinking about the trends...but, they don't know how involved the question really is - hence part II of this report from this luxury interior designer!

Important to note is that trends do not come in with a crash, halting all that came before. Rather, these mini-social commentaries tend to evolve in arcs.  Think evolution, not revolution. Trends are not jarring and abruptly final.  Instead trends develop, a process which keeps us feeling comfortable & unthreatened.  A trend’s slow descent keeps it feeling familiar to us. Here's what to expect to see entering the scene at retail and in the design magazines of 2011.

    Style Trends

    Go for Baroque:
2011's next style revival forecast is in and it's Baroque. The fun news is the way it's coming in. Imagine a contemporary shaped object, like a ceramic urn, but with heavily scrolled metal handles. Classic motifs are added to angular forms. Inlay on wood is done...but with metal. This is the new 21st century classicism.

    Vintage Vibe:
The economic stress is creating a desire for comfort and romanticism. Look for laces, plaids and patchwork designs. Fringes show up in unexpected locations like along the back of a wooden dining chair. Velvet is strong in aged or crushed looks. Expect to see cotton, linen, hemp, and intentional fading and fraying in total.

Counter Trend (every trend has one): Structure:  Contemporary is gaining in popularity  more than at any other time, to include the mid century modern period! We're seeing furniture with zigzags, odd lines that the eye has to follow. Shapes are big:  trapezoids and triangles, rectangles rather than squares...whether in embellishments or actual furniture silhouettes.

How to use it:  If you love it, start small. Pillows, a chair, artwork. If you hate it, steer clear and don't look back. Just smile, wave and let it pass.

    Accessory Alert

    Accessory Themes:

As sustainability stays on the brain, tribal themes do, too. Rugs and decorative objects show animal prints...or just plain old animals. Elephants, tigers, lions and even objects that look “found in the forest” like bark or nests.  These show up in artwork, framed prints to baubles. Whimsy is back, too - dragonflies and butterflies adorned fabrics and objets d'art.

Displaying your Accessories:  Forget displaying a few accessories on a coffee table.  One of the most exciting and notable interior design trends at Paris' recent Maison and Objet Design Show was the "Display Wall." Here, a "built in" showcases our collections. These structures are literally built in floor to ceiling, wall to wall - with either shelves OR nooks, crannies and cubbies in which to feature and showcase our accessories. Accessories now become art.

How to use it:  Create a feature wall in a plain, architecturally un-interesting room and display your entire collection of cream ware. (Who cares if it's from Sotheby's, Target or the Flea Market...who'll know or think to ask if it's in a feature wall??)  Or do as I am now on a project - create a niche to surround and cozy up a sofa.
