Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse Recap from a Top Bucks County Designer

I may be a Bucks County Girl & Designer - but I'm a New Yorker, born and bred. What a treat then to head back up to see what my NYC design colleagues are up to. And no better way than checking out the famous Kip's Bay Decorator Show House...still benefiting after 38 years, the Kip's Bay Girls and Boys Club....serving over 13,000 children.




Design show houses may be great little jewel boxes for lay people and designers to float through. But they are really something more. Within the design world - what a show house really is - other than a designer's expensive but great marketing opportunity - is ....a fabulous and freedom filled design laboratory for designers. Here we can stretch our wings, our imaginations and our design-commentary. In so doing...we inspire new perspectives and ideas for layperson and professional alike. Here are some noted trends from the Kips Bay 2010 Show House at 106 E. 71st Street, NYC. (Rendering here of the marvelously elegant foyer done by Rod Winterrowd, Inc.)












Ceilings, Ceilings, So help me Ceilings.


WOW. Nary a ceiling was left untouched. They were the respected 5th wall of the room - the important 5th wall that the great Albert Hadley cautioned designers ought not forget. And the Kips Bay Show House designers didn't. These were wallpapered, they were 'silver leafed" (actually aluminum-leafed so there is no tarnishing involved...smart....), they were coiffured, they were painted sometimes with the only color in the room. My hat goes off to Cullman and Kravis for their aluminum leafed "Dinner at Eight" dining room. So luminous by day...one can only imagine the effect in the evening by candle light. As an aside...sometimes mydesign clients out here in Bucks County, PA are a little stunned when they see that my color plan selections involve treating the ceiling...but don't knock that ceiling treatment until you've tried it peeps. What great "life" and breadth a treated ceiling brings to a room. Before I leave the ceiling world...




The Ceiling Oscar goes to Noel Jeffrey for his pale yellow ceiling in his master bedroom pictured later in this post. His soft but sunny ceiling in the monochromatic interior makes a naturally dark NYC bedroom feel sunny, cheery and bright all the time. Clever.




Treated Walls:


Wall paper is back, back, back. This is not news ...though not many clients here in the burbs are jumping on this train the way they are in the cities. So...if you're a burb-dweller...read on. From grass cloth used subtly or set inside shadow boxing - to deliciously executed Venetian Plaster that was taken to a marvelous high sheen thanks to buffing, buffing and more buffing - to walls covered in fabric. Wall paper in refreshed retro prints was as frequently used as textured cloths, combed papers and so forth. The Lesson: There's more to life than an egg shell finished painted wall, even if it is done in a great Ben Moore paint color...(Ben...still love you...)






Cut Up the Rug:
Make that...deeply carve the rug. The rich texture story of the walls and ceiling fell to the floor by way of exciting, deeply textured area rugs ...mostly in neutral palettes. Most striking about them was how deep their dimensional textures really were ...whether hand cut, or woven with a dramatic low and high pile. Wow! Exciting. Nice foot feel too. (Yes...it was me, the designer from Yardley that was on her knees constantly petting all of the area rugs to check things out... :) )

I have to tip my hat to:
Elizabeth Pyne for her bedroom pictured above here. She wisely and boldly wrapped the oddly shaped room in a singular foil pattern and fabric in order to mute the odd angles and proportions in the room. Her mixture of textures - the rough, the fluffy and the smooth with the foil paper was spot on. Elizabeth Pyne is is young, bold and exciting...I expect great things from her. How lovely that she was on site to chat about her creation. Other hat tips goes to...



Noel Jeffrey for his master bedroom shown below, (the one with that delicious yellow ceiling I mentioned earlier.) Forget how 1940's chic this bedroom is or how masterfully Jeffrey mixes 1970's vintage with Hollywood glamour. Forget that formerly mentioned yellow ceiling to lend perpetual soft sunshine. Forget the way he causally tossed a single saffron yellow chair center stage in the room...literally just off center...to create some "I"m not even trying" design cool. Forget his marvelous work with sheers to soften the corners in the rooms as well as flit over the windows. No...forget his delicious artfulness for a sec. Let's talk about what a gentle, kind, humble,thoughtful and generous man Noel Jeffrey is. He happened to be on site in his room when my colleague and I passed through. Listening to Noel Jeffrey speak about the interior and how he created it was like listening to Bach talk about how he created that little diddle The Brandeburg Concerttos with an "oh..it was nothing air of humility." Thank you Noel Jefferey...you were a show highlight...as was your delicious work....even more beautiful than your photograph here shows. I'm a fan.

Well my peeps - I could go on - but you have places to go and people to see and so do I. The take away from the 2010 Kips Bay Show House show was crisp, clean lines cut with a great mixture of lush textures. Richly done walls, ceilings and floors were a highlight. Grays were still present in delicious abundance, but cut sweetly with creams and vanillas for freshness and life. Reverse painted glass found its way onto a kitchen back splash to excellent effect....I regret that I have no photo and as soon as I can figure out how to mount it properly...I have to do one for somebody! And if you have a sec - go google Nina Helms and check out here plaster wall sculptures. Terrific! Go Nina.

All in all - I left the show house as one should...ready to get back to the design drafting table...rarin' to go and bursting with inspiration. Thank you to my wonderful NYC design colleagues!

Modern interior design ideas are as varied as there are people who come up with them. The role of modern art pieces within the design, things like bronze sculpture, wood turnings, abstract paintings, stone etchings, and the like, is central to making a living space more pleasant and intriguing. They often work well with the other colors, shapes, and textures you choose to put in any given space. Perhaps the best reason to include them in an interior design is precisely because they are complementary to nearly any space. Whether that space is large and open with very few items, or small and cluttered, the right piece in the right place can make a valuable contribution.

A surprising thing about many modern interior design ideas is how available they are to almost anyone. Let's say, for example, that you are in a shop or gallery and you just fall in love with a certain sculpture or painting. Maybe you can afford it without a second thought and are happy to take it away as part of your growing collection. But maybe it is priced a little above what you can really justify. But you still want it. Never fear, thankfully, many times those pieces you desire can be purchased over time. They are not just for the rich and famous. Many galleries even have layaway programs. If you find a piece that is too much for your budget, just communicate with the curator and see what might be worked out. Before you know it, you'll have it paid for and displayed proudly in your home or office.

So how does a piece of art fit within the modern interior design ideas that you may have? Will it be a clash? Will it "work"? These are great questions to ask yourself. Many people are particularly perplexed on how to implement them in the parts of their living spaces that are not the normal locations for such things. Within a home, in particular, there are the normal entryways and hallways that often become the new display location for many of the pieces one might acquire. A beautiful sculpture displayed proudly on an appropriate stand makes an interesting and inviting experience for your guests when they first step into your home. A nice big abstract painting may be just the thing to spark some interesting conversation with your guests in your office. But what about the other rooms, like the bathroom, or a bedroom. These spaces need help and are often overlooked.

Art can go just about anywhere, if it is the right material. With a little thought and effort, and some help from experts when needed, your modern interior design ideas can be successfully implemented throughout whatever space you want. In the bathroom, paying attention to the naturally increased humidity level is important. A long hot shower or bath is certainly going to make some art pieces impractical to add to the space. You don't have to settle for cold, intimidating, modern empty bathroom spaces. Just add the right bronze sculpture or properly protected piece of abstract art on the wall and the whimsy or color you introduce will absolutely make the space come alive.

This same principle applies equally to all the rooms in your house. Be bold. Try what you think you will like. If you don't like something, you can always change it. Have fun with the emotional responses that art creates in you and others. Well....on second thought. Don't forget it. Just tell it to move over. It's got company.




Enter...the Luxury Home Office. Yum. These sumptuous home office work spaces boast rich surroundings designed to create ease and comfort. They are marvelous and something of a speciality of mine. Perhaps becuase I understand how they enhance quality of life, productivity and creativity for the lucky occupant.



In the 135 mile-an-hour Life we all live called "21st Century Living", one of the greatest things we can do for ourselves, our vitality, our mental health, our sense of well being and quality of life....and for our iPhone, our iPads, our louder-faster-funnier computers, is to bring forth our own little slice of heaven in our work space. What a treat to bask in - let alone function in - our own luxury home office.


More and more Americans are working from home today. From telecommuting part or full time as part of the new virtual worker force, to running a business from home...perhaps a primary or secondary business....to taking work home with us because our work flow has increased due to company lay offs...more and more of us are spending more and more very real hours in our home offices. No wonder we are outgrowing the callous-creating 'fit' provided by haphazardly created home offices. These are the home offices of the recent past, complete with particle board assembled desks and file cabinets, topped off by the well-used peg board on the wall. Chaos and clutter reign and the aesthetic needed to make us feel comfortable, comforted, supported, invigorated, centered, focused and energeized...well...it just isn't there. So for the multitude of the "Successful, Busy or On-The Go" who are holed up in their home offices and wishing they could escape those very same office spaces, I love to guide these clients in creating what I call luxury home offices.

Form and function are the two primary factors in any design scheme. Whether you're designing an aircraft carrier or a sock, the principles must work together to ensure that the outcome is not only attractive, but serves its intended purpose. With this said, it becomes quite easy to discern how business interior design differs from home interior design. The form (the look) of the plan must follow the function (the needs) of the location.

In a home setting, you have a set of needs to meet. They are very different from those of the staff occupying office space. Still, they do have some overlap. For instance, while the sort of chairs used in a living room might differ slightly from those in a waiting room, you'd still want them to be comfortable and inviting. In the same vein, a table meant to seat a family for dinner and a conference table seating sales executives would have many similarities. Still, there are more than enough differences between the schemes to ensure that a separate approach is used to planning the final look for either.

In the office, the functionality of each piece and their seamless integration into the mechanism of the working environment is essential. Interpersonal or interdepartmental, there is a need for the work place to invite shared information and yet, also some implicit boundaries are needed, too. Window Treatment Primer - Part 2 - Get What You Need

How do you cut through the noise and confusion when it comes to excellent custom window treatments?



a) With luck and a prayer


b) With a martini and a map


c) With a good, fair, sensible and ethical designer.




Hopefully - you selected option C. Now, put down the vodka...this need not be painful.





Here are some things you should look for and discuss with your designer when dipping your toe into the deep waters of custom window treatments. As you read, you'll see a variety of treatments I've done for clients in the not too distant past. They range from simple and understated, to lush and richly detailed, or as you see here - to quite signature and show stopping. Always - the design concept comes from my careful analysis of my clients' design fingerprint...what they they crave and how to make their interiors look and 'feel' marvelous to them. The shots shown in this post were not taken when the rooms were fully completed... ....but they do show the endless range possible with excellent custom window design.


Here are some pointers to help you on your custom window treatment journey:




1) Budget. You must know your budget so your designer can work to that budget - not over it. Avoid the cat-and-mouse game of "what do you think it will cost?" That's like asking..."What will food cost?" Do you mean breakfast, lunch, dinner - a meal out or a meal at home - at Duncan Donuts or at the Four Seasons? If you've picked the right designer, you should be able to honestly and comfortably discuss 'the b word' - budget - with her. And if you didn't...go get another designer. You deserve better!




2) Function. What do you need to do with your treatments? Do you need opaque privacy? Veiled privacy and light control? Must the treatments close? Do you need layered treatments - one component that closes and another that remains stationary for 'decoration?' Would you like your window treatments open and close with a remote control? Bare in mind...the more moving parts put on a window treatment - the more fabric and the more flourishes - though they may grow in beauty and function...they they will also grow in dollars out of pocket. This is logically due to the elevated raw materials and labor needed to achieve those very enhancements.



3) Design (Aka...what you want it to look like.) Notice this last topic came AFTER budget and function. Pretty comes last - function comes first - and regrettably budget drives all of design so get budget and function ironed out first. A smart and talented designer can guide you.







As far as the 'beauty end' goes - Do pull inspiration photos to share with your designer. Look for patterns in what you've pulled out to show her. Do you like simple straight lines? Lots of flourishes? Are you drawn to lots of folds? Do you like when your window treatments leap off the wall - or settle quietly against the wall color? Do you prefer under-dressed windows? Do you like lots of glass? Do you like unexpected flourishes? Are you confused? A smart and talented designer should be able to reach underneath your language to find your true cravings.







4) Correct challenges. Consider features in your room you'd like corrected or enhanced with your window treatments. Do you need to pull together some furnishings? Are you trying to update your space? Do you wish your windows appeared larger or your ceiling higher? These challenges can be addressed with Wise Design in window treatments. She originally asked for floor length panels in this narrow hallway...but for safe footing in both day and in the evening, we agreed that sill length would do the trick.






A word of help if you are budget squeezed:




If you are the top of your budget just trying to get into the custom drapery world, but you really do want the customized fabric choices and fullness that custom window treatments provide - (not to mention flourishes and dress-maker details...) then do yourself and your squeezed budget a favor and keep your designs as simple as possible. Think about it - simpler designs require less fabric and far, far less labor. As an aside...let me share that custom treatments are a high labor game. They require endless hours to fabricate and fabricate well...that's why they cost what they...and look as marvelous as they do.














If custom window treatments are out your price range entirely - than go for the best you can afford in ready mades. Try catalogers like Smith and Noble for what I'd call "solid" semi-custom product that delivers a good value within the price range. And if you're looking for ready mades, I think Restoration Hardware does good looking simple treatments in the ready-made world - but they do them with a more lush and full look than the big bed and bath shops will. (for kids rooms and nurseries...bed and bath shops are great...please no pull chords however!)






So how do you get what you want in the custom window treatment world? Be clear on your goals - clear on your needs - clear on your budget - and go to the right resources. A good designer should be able to assist - or at the least - help point you int the right direction when it comes to plunking down dollars and decisions on such an critically important room element as window treatments.

Window Treatment Primer from The Diva of Drapery

I've been called many things...most good (!) - but I really did love it when I was given the title "Diva of Draperies" by a favorite someone once. I'd like to thank the Academy...and my mother. And by the way - I will also answer to "Queen of Curtains."


I love window treatments...from design to fabrication to installation...to the marvelous moment when a client walks into the room to see the newly installed custom draperies I've designed had fabricated with my workroom. This is when the excited breath is drawn - and smiling widely something is uttered excitedly that is the equivalent to "Holy Smokes...I can't believe this is my room/house/home. I loooove these window treatments and what they did to this room." I get goosebumps just re-living the process with you now. Magic.


Window treatments remarkably affect a room's over all sense of comfort and mood. Small wonder. They are framing one of the key - and often largest - architectural features in a room.... all that glass. I cannot stress enough the power and action that the right window treatment has in an interior to include the following:


*Gorgeously connecting your furnishings... or adjoining rooms


*Deftly joining mis-matched, unevenly hung or unusually shaped windows


*Adeptly correcting architectural oddities


*Perfectly updating a room (perhaps without adding much else new)


*Exponentially improving and upping the 'charm' factor in a room


*Conveniently providing Privacy


*Providing important Light Blocking or Light Control


*Providing Sound Absorption


*Assisting with heat loss and heat gain.

*Protecting furnishings

I could go on. Instead...a warning: Windows and their treatment rank among some of the 1st elements that will date a room - one of the key elements that can shut down a room - and window treatments remain an area of great confusion for many people.
