Architectural Salvage To Make An Interior Sing

Yes, you read that correctly. I said Sing. SING! Like...Gene Kelly, singing in the rain, singing! Like what's-her-name singing at the stadium when her costume malfunctioned! Like me...belting one out in my car, when nobody is looking! Yes! That kind of singing.

Welcome my peeps...to treasure island: Architectural Antiques Exchange. Mmm. Mmm.

Take a spin here to find something for your latest project and not only will your interior sing...but you will too as you roam this fantastic old down down Philadelphia building.

Look at this stunning mantel...and all of the fabulous doors. This is but an itty-bitty-teeny-tiny sampling! New construction that needs some instant character, any one?

How about some perfect iron work as artwork to hang on a wall or above a fireplace mantel? Great way to sprinkle a little Andalusian or Tuscan charm into an interior. Or perhaps something is grabbing you for the sun room or conservatory? Here's one small corner of their vast selection of grills, grates and fences pieces.

And for that media room project...your jaw will drop when you see all of the the salvaged bars. Some of the stunners are just massive - others - like this beautiful bar - are perfectly scaled for homes today.

It so happens my children were with me on the day I shot these as we were heading downtown for a little outing. I can never pass of a chance to pop in however....and even my kids had a ball (ages 10 & 14...but these kids like art and all things interiors...surprised?)

They enjoyed the little education I gave them when we all stumbled into a few fun Art Deco pieces ...like this bureau...

...or this fun sofa & set of club chairs.

What a great place to go for an hour of wandering...or die-hard design shopping.
    Have fun!

Custom Window Designs - Come Join Me!

Well Peeps - I'm getting ready to head over to see a client in a short while to share with her one of my favorite things to share...window designs that I've rendered for her review - along with some snappy fabric choices for said window designs.

Times like these . . I love my job. :) (Don't talk to me on book keeping and paper work day however....)
Now, I can't share these renderings with you yet - I won't publish renderings that a client has not yet seen, so I'll save these for another day. But in the meantime, here are some other wonderful renderings that another client recently saw and loved and will soon be having us get underway to build for her and her family. Here's what you're about to see:

    Project Scope in a Nutshell:

Guest room for in-laws, who will be coming for an extended stay. When asked what color scheme they'd like in their room, 1/2 of said team requested lavender/purple for the room.
Now THAT - is a different choice! Super!

What a powerful and exciting color request. Nothing run-of-the-mill in that request...and thus one I felt we absolutely had to honor. When I articulated it this way to my client, she agreed. Her reservation? Oh, I forgot to mention. The carpet is celery green. No matter, said I - that the carpet in the room is brand new and is a celery green. Good design and savvy fabric choices would be where we'd find our solution to yet another Design Puzzle.

I promised my client that when we get done with this space, it will be elegant, quiet, restful....and will contain some delicious plum. Take a look at these 2 rendering choices (no time to upload the 3rd right now...sorry...but now you know she didn't pick that one!). Give me your vote....which design would you select and why? (notice in both designs I'm keeping the plum "off" the celery carpet...this is no accident....)
The color scheme for the whole suite will be vanilla and plum - with a splash of celery. See if you can guess which design option the client loved best. They are quite similiar and differ only in their flourish. (We had already selected these wonderful fabrics for her....) (Accurate wall color not shown...)

    Option #1

    Option #2

Look forward to hearing from you! And I'll do my best to keep you updated on the project status....the feature wall we're doing...all kinds of goodies.....

Great Interior Design Quotes

"Easy come, easy go, Alice." These are the wise words of slob-sage Ralph Kramden from The Honeymooners. Ralph may have had his short points - but when you really think about some of the things he said...sometimes...the man had a point.
I love quotes. If you read my biweekly newsletter - you already know that I like quotes a lot and I like equally quotes on personal growth and inspiration as well as on interior design. Quotes, like good poetry, can say something large in a small space.

Here are a few of my favorite Interior Design Quotes. Dig deep and listen - and you'll glean some great design advise. You tell me which one is your favorite.

....for the woman of few words:
    "Control, edit & distill."
    - Van Day Treaux (This is brilliant advise for those smart enough to listen.)
...for the grump with perhaps a point:
    "I don't like amusing rooms."
    - Marian Hall (I threw this in because frankly, I found it....amusing!)
    . . . for the ....oh...well, I'll let you categorize the rest!
"I believe in optimism & plenty of white paint."
    - Elsie De Wolfe

"You can never achieve anyhing in a house unless you have things that have been passed down and you find a place for them yourself."

    - Sister Parish

"Crossing too many t's and dotting too many i's makes a room look overdone and tiresome. One should create something that fires the imagination without overemphasis."
    - Nancy Lancaster.
"An interior is the natural projection of the soul."
    - Coco Chanel
"Remember, color is not just color, but mood, temperature and structure."
    - Van Day Treux
"Decorating is the art of arranging beautiful things, comfortably."
    - Billy Baldwin
"Ceilings must always be considered. They are the most neglected surface in the room."
    - Albert Hadley
"Our personal happiness - in our homes and in our lives - is our own responsibility."
    - Denny Daikeler
    "Repeat Shapes to gain harmony."
    - Eleanor McMillen Brown
Peeps - I have but scratched the surface here. There are scads more quotes that I could share. I didn't even include William Morris for heaven's sake...whom I quote often to clients. So I'll tell you what....I'll leave you now with the promise of more of these pearls to come at some future date. In the meantime.....
    "Live Long & Prosper."

25 Functional Furniture Designs Inspired by Skateboards

Design is a field with so many creative approaches that we can never run out of ideas to share. For today we decided to show you just a little tiny piece of that creativity in these 25 amazing functional furniture designs inspired by skateboards. Some of these unusual items were already featured on Freshome, but this post will bring some news as well. Skateboarding fan or not, we think it’s time for you to start living “on fast wheels” and we might just have a few inspiring ideas for you in this upcoming article.
    1. The God Father Launge Chair is the most elegant item in our display. It features a total of seven decks with very comfortable cushions, perfect for providing a high level of relaxation. This chair is great for a modern interior, or a contemporary work area. Its color makes it very sober and stylish. -via Skate Study House
    2. Skateboard Table Light is an ingenious item for any skateboard lover or unusual design fan. Made from a common skateboard with an uncommon finish, this table light can offer its user the chance to note things down when needed with the help of a chalk. If you think about it, this is quite a simple idea: you open the light and write. We found this item being sold here, for a price of $129. As you can see in the second photo, it goes great in a bedroom for teens.
    3. The Skateboard Speaker Shelf looks great for a decorative object most of us would probably like to have in our room. As you probably guessed, this design has a double functionality. You can use it as a shelf and place books, CDs or picture frames on it. Still, we think the speaker idea is a lot more interesting: this skateboard has a mp3 player pouch and two integrated speakers, which makes listening to music a real treat.-via ubergizmo
    4. Chad Knight’s Shred Bed comes from retired skateboarder Chad Knight who stated that his motto is “Eat, breathe, sleep skateboarding”. Well, we don’t know about the first two, but sleeping is definitely possible when surrounded by skateboards and in the picture below you have an incontestable proof. This bed was designed by simply placing 5 decks together to create a head board and five more for the opposite part of the bed. This design is said to be on the market soon- do you think it will be successful?
    5. Skateboard “Three Sixty” Table comes from Sports Utility Furniture and has a very original appearance. Its designers described it as “the endless rotational table where nothing will ever be out of your reach”. The glass tabletop can spin due to the skating wheels sustaining it. Its legs are made of quality wood and a resistant oil finish. This gives the overall design a friendly look. A great idea for an original living-room, the “Three Sixty” Table can complement other wooden furniture items in creating a warm interior environment.
    6. The Jet Set Lounge Chair is a very elegant furniture piece, perfect for the outdoors. It doesn’t take a skateboarding fan to like this, as we think this is the type of designs that appeals to a large public. Made from 8 decks, each covered in neoprene (which is the material used for surfer costumes), this stylish lounge chair is a good choice for pool owners. It looks highly comfortable and can also dry up easily.- via Skate Study House
    7. The Skateboard Stax Chair looks like a tiny outdoor bench and is made of three decks and plywood. We imagine it as being the perfect place to rest for young skateboarders who had just finished their intense practice. It goes well outdoors, on the patio or in a themed skateboard room. We think it looks quite original, don’t you? Found it online here.
    8. We featured the Skateboard Shelf in a previous post here on Freshome, do you recognize it? Unusual and dynamic, these four decks of different sizes create a a lovely storage system. A lot of depositing space is available and it can even be used as a bookcase. When Michael first wrote about it, the Skateboard Shelf was on sale on Walmart for $40. We can not find it on their online store anymore, but perhaps they have few of them left in their deposits. Worth checking.
    9. The Comet Coffee Table is a playful design that combines art with sports. It features a glass tabletop and eight crossed decks. Their junction looks particularly interesting and gives the design a dynamic and restless feel- sounds a little like skateboarding, doesn’t it? All in all, the coffee table has an original appearance and it would suit great in a living room, together with other similar decorating items.-via Skate Study House
    10. The Nova Lamp is a stylish free standing floor lighting system which emits a warm light when plugged. The unusual design is made out of three decks combined together with the help of subtle metal structures. Great for the living room and bedroom, the Nova Lamp has a strong aesthetic effect and can contribute to the originality of an interior. The item is available in two types of wood and colorful finishes. You can order this product online here.
    11. A functional wall clock inspired by skateboarding sounds weird enough to be put to practice. The Astro Clock pays tribute to the polyurethane wheels invention in the 70′s and was made using 12 colorful skateboard wheels. A wooden center completes its dynamic and very appealing look. Fresh and youthful, this type of wall clock could go great in the teens’ room. You can get more information on purchasing this product here.
    12. The Skateboard Stairs were carefully crafted using skateboard decks and have a well defined charm. They were designed for a skateboarding school using wood and a few metal objects as well. This may be an utopic idea, but we imagine them connecting the levels of a home completely inspired by skateboarding. One could even turn that in a museum some day. We found them online here.
    13. The Skateboard Mirror is a clever and sportish element that can be placed either in the teens’ room or in a bathroom. It features a skateboard with exterior wheels, in life-size, perfect for a good reflexion. We also like the way it comes on the wall, it almost looks like a trophy, especially for the “hard-rock” skaters. You can pre-order this item at Purves, for the sum of $224.
    14. PB Teen‘s Sakteboard Hooks and Shelving ideas caught our attention due to their fresh appearance. We find the hook to be quite ingenious and original: after all, it is not every day you see clothes being hung on wheels. Both of the objects were creating using a deck and some additional materials which help with the positioning on the wall. We found them being showcased here.
    15. The Skateboard Hang Up Coat Hanger is a very interesting decorating item with a practical function as well. Made from metal wires with eight colorful skateboard wheels, this coat hanger is sure to freshen up any hallway, especially the one of a skateboarding fan. The color of the wheels can be chosen by the user and the product can be ordered online here.
    16. This Skateboard Bench is especially designed for the outdoors. This item was created using only recycled products- including four skateboard decks and plastic for the legs- which turns it into a sustainable design as well. Whether you place it in your garden or in your lawn, the skateboard bench is sure to attract the looks of the passers-by.- via Ski Chair
    17. Here is another cool design that helps one keep stuff organized. This Bookend Skateboard shelving system could do a great job in replacing a bedside table and is perfect for storing small objects. It comes in a variety of colors and it costs $40. It is made of two decks, combined together by using a very subtle metal gizmo. You can order this product online on Skatelab.
    18. The Skateboard Swing offers a different type of skateboarding sensation, but a great one nonetheless. This beautiful wooden swing is made out of four decks united in order to create a backrest for the swingers. We think this is a creative design to have in any yard, especially for the skateboarding fans. It doesn’t look very hard to assemble either, all it takes is a little time and patience. But until you create this swing yourself, there is an offer online available here, for the sum of $599,95.
    19. A Skateboard Picture Frame can act as a cheerful and welcoming design in any room. Creative and fresh, this picture frame could fit great in a room for teens bringing a plus of originality. In case we are talking about the room of a “hard-rock” fan, this frame could contain photos of his or her skateboard, even if this seems a bit redundant. Last time we checked, these items were available at Skatelab. For purchase, you can contact them for an online offer.
    20. The Criss-Crossed Bookshelf is another interesting design inspired by skateboards. Made from wood and with a few colorful additions, the shelving system can act both as a bookcase and a regular furniture piece for storing items. It is made of six decks which were criss-crossed for resistance. The margins can also be used for hanging different types of clothing articles. -via Skate Study House
    21. This Skateboard Chair and Ottoman can serve as an interesting looking seating item in those late afternoons spent outdoors. It doesn’t look all that comfortable, though, so a cushion is advisable. However, the feet rest looks pretty practical and could increase the level of relaxation of the user. The skateboard chair was achieved by using 5 decks and a wooden support.- via SkiChair
    22. This interesting Skateboard Bedside Table belongs to designer Jake Ryder from Seattlemakes, an artist who created a lot of amazing and functional items out of recycled materials. This particular bedside table is made of wood and four decks, one of which acts like a drawer closing system. We find this idea to be quite creative, don’t you?- via Hometone
    23. Skateboard Tokyo Lounge Table is an elegant coffee table, perfect for a having a drink with friends. This design was created from simple skate decks that were reshaped in order to become the table’s legs and a stylish glass tabletop. Four decks were used for this furniture piece and we think the end result is quite impressive. This table was a part of a project called Skate Study House and implemented by designers Pierre Andre Senizergues and Gil Le Bon De Lapointe.
    24. These amazing Skateboard Stools come from Deckstool and are made out of recycled materials. As you can see, they are quite various in shape, which makes each and anyone of them unique. Made from skateboarding decks, they have a dynamic touch and could go great in a themed room or even outdoors, in a skate-park for example. Where else do you think these stools would be appropriate?
    25. The Skateboard Wall was created out of plywood- the material used for producing skateboards- and features a pattern inspired from a real size deck. This item could bring a touch of style to any living room or bedroom. It can be used for various purposes, including room separating. You can order this product online by placing an order here.

We hoped you guys enjoyed this display of crazy but functional designs inspired by skateboards and we invite you to come up with ideas for similar products. In the mean time, you are challenged to let us know which item caught your attention and why.Source URL: https://interiordesignq.blogspot.com/2010/07/

How to Maximize Every Inch of a Small Closet

Your closets are the most underutilized, yet precious space in your entire home! From the largest to the smallest home, storage is the number one area that is lacking in home design today. In every closet take an inventory of what is there, what can be discarded, or stored in another location in your home. You will not be able to utilize your closet to its full potential with excess ‘stuff’. From the ceiling to the floor, let’s maximize every inch of your small closet.

ANALYZE: Every closet and their owner should approach organization differently. Analyze how much you use your closet and for what purposes. If you have a lot of clothes for every season, then your concentration should be on organization that helps you quickly identify your clothes. While, if you mostly keep your office products and kid’s school supplies in the closet, your organization will require floor storage that can be stacked and that is heavy.

CLOTHING: For those of you with seasonal clothing, consider using your hanging space strictly for in-season clothing. This way you aren’t looking at clothes that you aren’t going to wear now. Store out of season clothes in under bed storage bins, or in covered boxes at the top of your closet. Consider buying closet organization shelving that offers areas for folded, hanging, and accessories. Use vertical space up to the ceiling if possible. Shoes can be a project in themselves. If you have a large quantity, assess how often you wear them. Only keep your top one’s out. The others can be stored in stackable clear bins, or opt for a shoe rack over the door.

SUPPLIES: Office supplies like paper and folders can be heavy when stored in bulk. Consider stacking paper ream boxes and other supplies on the floor, but only to the height that you can access contents easily. Usually two boxes high, you can still hang items above, and open a box without disturbing other areas of the closet. If you are into crafts, scrapbooking, photography, etc… Consider buying organization and storage dollies that fit adjacent to your workspace. This allows for mobility of your supplies, and frees up your closet. If you need to use the closet for small supplies, use drawers that can be labeled, as well as clear storage bins in various sizes. Check with craft manufacturer’s, they often will specialize in storage solutions appropriate for your hobby.

TAKE PICTURES: Another useful option for small closets is to take pictures of your closet, and measure the space. Take photos and measurements with you to organization stores to accurately buy storage supplies to fir your space. If you are overwhelmed in the store, ask for a take home catalog before you make your purchase.

If you are a small closet owner, when you buy clothes and supplies in the future consider where it will go. Sometimes the best way to cure a small storage problem is to not buy more than you can store. Storage will always be a challenge, although with planning and analyzing, the job might not be so menacing.Source URL: https://interiordesignq.blogspot.com/2010/07/

Spoon Bathroom Set, a Highly Original Design Approach

We really like creative designs, ones that manage to surprise us and make us ask ourselves : ” now why didn’t I think of that?” And we know you guys do too, which is why we try to find as many as possible. This crazy spoon bathroom set comes from Philip Watts Design and has a unique source of inspiration. The spoon sink and urinal have a slick and original design, bringing elegance to any type of bathroom interior. You know how cabinets are placed under the sinks in order to hide their bottom. Well this is no longer the case with the spoon sink. This design has such a stylish “teardrop” shape, that it improves the appearance of an interior, rather than disturbing it. What do you say? Is its look worth not having a storage cabinet ?Source URL: https://interiordesignq.blogspot.com/2010/07/

Credenza, an Elegant Decorative Furniture Item with a Rich History

“Credenza” is a compact furniture item created by designer Jason Phillips. Our readers who work in the field of design probably know its rich history: “Credenza” in an Italian term which means “belief’. Back in the 16′th century, “credenza” was the act of tasting food by a slave for his master. Later on, the term become popular and started spreading in a variety of domains, including design. In the 19′th century, “credenza” was the name for a very fashionable furniture item made from wood and with a few decorations. Getting back to the present time, Jason’s product is a beautiful compact design with an interesting staircase-shaped bottom and stylish carvings that create a pattern. This could fit well in a contemporary interior, even though its maintenance- dusting, for example- might not be so effortless.- via Behance

Designing Wholeness In Life, by Only A Designer

As a designer, I have the privilege, the responsibility, the glory - and sometime the difficulty - of being invited into a client's home. Their inner sanctum. It is a great responsibility. And so, with my best and most respectful intention, I remain careful to keep a professional resonance to what I always hope is a warm and productive relationship. But whether due to my constitution or simply due to the 'proximity' designing a home creates...I am sometimes made privy to the Life challenges and struggles clients - people - face.

But, I'm only the designer, I reason. I must keep my mouth shut. I listen compassionately. I keep my comments brief and sympathetic. After all, I'm only the designer. It's not my place to say too much or to say the wrong thing. In design, I am aware of the need to create an aesthetic design boundary in a room to 'make it feel right.' I am certainly aware of the necessity of boundaries in Life...trust me! Professional boundaries. Important.

Still. Remaining compassionate but not saying what I know to be true to a client...because I'm only the designer....this is difficult.

This week was a heavy week for an empath like me. I encountered clients with parents who are dying, spouses who are becoming wheelchair bound, family pets that are dying (Hey...don't knock this if you've never had a pet. Even greater...I learned long ago not to judge other people's sorrows. Sorrow is sorrow ...and in the moment that it's yours...it hurts.) I had clients recovering from widowhood, others fearing a job loss. I'm spent. I wish I could take it all away - the suffering, the grief, the loss. Yes, a heavy week.

At this moment, a discussion on designing Home and Hearth this week here in my fairy blog- dom. seems pale. Instead, I'd like to share something more even sacred than the crafting of Home. Instead, let's you and I go to a different drafting table and sketch 2 of the elements that help Design Wholeness in Life.

Like every other surfer, I have been bounced around by Life's great waves - her sometimes brutal undertow and her unrelenting rising and falling tides. Somewhere around my millionth psycho-spiritual 'concussion' from being 'dragged under'' - I came to understand that every problem, no matter how dark and heavy it is, does come baring a gift. To those wise enough to find it and open it, that is.

For example, I didn't how how I'd ever learn to see true color again after my mother Naomi died. Everything in Life took on a slightly gray cast. For a very long while. But eventually, after fighting through the waves grief that pounded my shore - for too long a time for my own comfort I might add - one day I was able to stand and look back. I looked back and I saw that as heart broken as I had been to have lost this special friend, this mother and this spirit...something had happened to me. In me. I recognized that by the simple act of moving forward and fighting to regain my equilibrium, I had unwittingly become a much stronger, much sturdier ship. Because of her death. Becuase of the great suffering that came with her death, there came too this great gift - this great gift that my mother gave me by dying in my 37th year.

But how do I tell this to a client? It is not my place. I'm only a designer. So I say none of this and hope she'll find my blog. Here - where I feel able to speak more freely. And if it is you who suffers in any way - great or small - I must share one more very powerful and precious tool from the design tool box when it comes to designing wholeness in Life. This thing may elude you at first - but if you chase her long enough, you will catch her hand. I refer here to: Resilience.

In short, Resillience is the single engine that pushes the plane forward in any storm - long after all of the other engines have given out. Resilience. What a marvelous, mystical and magical piece of Life-design magic.

Here is my favorite resilience story:

I remember gardening early last spring in my 'just coming back to life' garden. As I knelt at the base of my favorite hydrangea - the one the children had long ago named "Angelica" because 'she' is prolific bloomer - I was struck by something. There on my knees in the dirt in my garden, I realized that I was surrounded by Resilience. In front of me stood my towering hydrangea - around me were all of my other 'botanical friends' and they were all singing in one grand chorus. They were bouncing back from the perils of winter. Little signs of budding, of 're-emerging life' were everywhere present in my formerly desolate looking garden. My rooted friends - my winter-pummeled, old green companions - were demonstrating with no flourish whatsoever, that they were thriving and surviving "in spite of." They were 'coming back' in spite of the unceasing, pelting challenges of a particularly harsh and long winter.

Faced with this show - believe it or not, the first thing I was struck by was my own weakness - and all of my old sorrows came flooding to me in a great wave. I felt suddenly burdened by all of the challenges I - and my family - have been given in he last few years in particular. I felt sad. I felt very sad. But no sooner had that sadness tickled my spirit that something much bigger and better landed in me. It was large enough to me that kneeling there, in the holy sanctum of my garden, I laid down my spade and I cried. (Have you ever had a good cry in the garden? They are rich.) But it was not sadness I felt. The tears that flowed came from a deep and abiding overwhelm and gratitude for the lesson and message these strong garden-dwellers offered me by their wise example. Their message was this: Resilience. These old friends, who stood still and quiet before me game me a gift: They shared a glimpse of their early buds - their burst back into their own greater glory after their long, deep winter. They laid before me the powerful reminder that the natural law of Life is this: To go forward. Resilience.

We move forward. We do. Not always straight; sometimes hobbled a bit by a circumstance or a sorrow, but on we go. Forward. Always. We go forward and we bloom again ..until of course we hit our next winter. And so repeats the movement of the seasons in the garden of our own Life.

So my friend - you may be in your own winter right now as you read this. But. Take heart. Know that there is a bloom that is being "prepared and worked" inside you right now. One day you will be wise enough to recognize and cultivate it. Just as I came to know the gift my mother left me in her passing -a gift I came to know only because I exercised enough resilience to get through the winter of her departure. Yes, you may be in your own winter right now, but know that your own currently 'unknown bloom' is inside you somewhere and it will one day show itself. Most likely when you least expect it. Possibly long after you've paid your last therapist bill or bought your 80th pair of make-me-feel-better shoes. You will bloom again. Life will bloom again. It is the natural law of the Garden called You. You will have one bloom, followed by another and another. And another. Resilience.

And while you cultivate your resilience, you will hit a weak moment. You will. But when you do, drag yourself through, just another inch and just another second, knowing that:

    *This too shall pass.

*There is a solution to every problem

*Resilience is the mother of survival.

    *Sometimes Life is difficult

    *This too shall pass (again.)

*Everything feels 'better' in the morning.

*Each sorrow comes with gift to be opened, long after its offering.

Plattitudes or Truth? I say both.

May we all water ourselves well with these truisms - these platitudes. May we water ourselves well . . . and find our next bloom. For it will come.

Employees need to be able to move around between tables with ease and customers don't want to be sitting too close to other tables. Yet you need to balance this by taking into consideration that open areas can be overwhelming when the restaurant is not filled to capacity. Don't forget a cashier area placed discreetly by the door. Ensure this does not interfere with normal flow of traffic. By considering all of these things when designing your restaurant, you will be sure to have a layout that is pleasing to all.
