Follow The Trends . . . I think not...

    (source: newlyweddiaries - Kitchen 1)

Designers have to walk a fine line. (Fade in Music . . . "It Isn't Easy Being Green"). We need to take care of our clients greatest interior-spatial-yearnings. Speak the aesthetic truth - even if it hurts. Maintain the highest design standard possible in any project. Remember to put our ego aside and serve the clients needs, always. Guide, as an industry expert, unquestionably. Tell the truth about trends. (Fade out music)

Trends. Can't live with 'em. Can't live without 'em.

I attended not less than 3 color seminars in 2009 - the "trend seminars." The last one was held at the Philadelphia Market Place Design Center and was conducted by a striking-looking and incredibly dressed editor of a most respected and posh design magazine. At the end of her trend presentation, the room of 60+ designers clapped respectfully, as did my well-loved colleague and partner-in-crime. The same well-loved colleague who turned to me as she clapped, asking, "Was there any news in there? Red is in; green is too, then there's the new blue. Don't forget the neutrals...was it me...or did she cover every spectral color?" I had to laugh. My pal had a point. The "On Trend" forecasts in color and design. They make me sigh. As will the favorite clients (and they are all favorite clients...can a mother choose favorites??) who will ask me in great ernest "But is it in style right now?"

No Miss Scarlett - YOU are in style. You are the trend and the belle of this ball.

Look at the kitchen above. It's a stunner. It represents the newer trend in kitchen design right now - something called "the unfitted kitchen." So titled because you'll notice the lack of upper cabinetry. (Sorry cabinet makers...there go your margins...) These are the kitchens that are reminiscent of kitchens in the early 20th century, before retrofitted cabinets would appear on the scene. Even earlier in 2009, at yet another trend seminar - this one on kitchens only, a marvelous designer offered during her presentations..."Kitchens are going to start looking like kitchens again. (!!) We're not hiding the fridge, (sorry Sub Zero) or the dishwashers...."

Now let's get back to reality. I'm involved in 2 kitchen renos at the moment. Sure - I love the unfitted look - its historical relevance and tip of the hat. However - now lets work in human sized kitchens with real people who actually NEED storage space in these reasonably sized kitchens. Clients who like their dishware and glassware, sure, but don't want to have to artfully arrange it on shelves every day. Or expect their 14-year-old son to do so when he empties the dishwasher as part of his daily chores. Clients who won't be happy having to dust their dishes on their dust -accumulating open shelves. (Dust your dishes? Oy....don't get me started....)
Then there is the color discussion. Sure colors morph from year to year - they brighten, they gray down. But I have to admit - I did a spectacular living room for a client in Princeton, NJ last year - and the splash in the room is not made by a shade that is 'in.' No - the marvelous wink in the room comes from their 18-year-old royal blue bergiere chairs - and the fabrics I found to work back to them. On trend color at the moment? Not by a long shot. A color loved by my clients. You betcha. The room is marvelous - and if I could figure out how to insert the photo here in my blog, I would! (I'm still a baby-blogger - I'll have to get another lesson from my husband, the tech genius...) (To take a look, copy & paste this link into your web browser: http://www.interiorsbydonnahoffman.com/portfolio_design.htm )
You get my point. You may want to take a good long whiff of the trends - enjoy their sweet aroma, possibly even dab a little bit at the wrists. But then, be willing to set them aside and fill your space with what you need (like upper cabinetry to hold your stuff) and with what you love - from colors to furniture silhouettes to flooring and the like.

PS...wallpaper is making a come back. We've been told this for 10 years. Slow boat? Missed the train? Discuss amongst yourselves!

Rainy Day Design Thoughts - Take Care Of Business & Stay Safe

I like blogging in blue. It's a sunnier way for me to work. I also like having either a very, very small - tiny little bouquet of fresh flowers here on my desk, (today they are yellow Gerberer daisy's - $2.99 at McCaffrey's food store. What a deal.) In lieu of fresh flowers - which I admit I don't always make the time to purchase - I also like to light a candle on my desk when I work. Again - just a sunnier way for me to work. So since it is raining and dreary outside right now - as it may well be for you too - let me share with you how this exercise - make your interior more sunny - worked for me not too long ago.
About a month ago I faced a large and neglected (by me) pile of 'designer paperwork.' Tackling that paper pile did not please this right brainer too very much. That's why it had been neglected in the 1st place. :) Still - it had to get done - hence the choice to add music to the task as well as light a candle. Now, my studio office is designed in such a way that my creative juices can just run wild in here. Because I work with color all day - I designed my office in delicious shades of vanilla only - very quiet and restful - but with tiny, intentional splashes soft plum - a little toile here, an awning stripe there. Subtle. Perfect. Just walking in here and taking a visual whiff, my design mojo starts working. But on that one particular day, just to get through my Mount Everst paperwork pile - the equivalent of a rainy day for this girl - well, I needed the extra environment push - the music and a candle. And did I mention my decaf blueberry cobbler coffee with a splash of skim - perfect. I did everything I could to my environment to make the task at hand go smoothly and feel a good as possible - and if possible - make it feel good! Add a little indoor sunshine.
As I worked, I noticed how relaxed I felt. The music was perfect. My coffee so yummy. I really felt good, focused, energized. I was whipping through that pile, filing, following up, revising, redesigning - getting things done. And I might add - I was feeling really quite pleased with myself. At one point, I recall consciously thinking, 'Wow - the power of a good envirnoment - this is really working - this really isn't so bad after all." It was almost at the same moment that this run-on thought crossed my designing mind that I realized that the client estimate that I held in my left hand had caught fire thanks to my candle. (It was for one of my favorite clients too - went up in flames. Scared me to death :) True story. But - work wtih me here for a sec.
My point is, find your own sunshine - and stick it into your environment - and unlike me in the story above - keep your brain turned on too. Don't fight 'what is.' Today, it is gray and dreary outside. Because I rely on natural light here, I know that color will not look right in my studio at the moment - so I'm not going to do any fabric searches. Instead - I'll take care of other business in other ways. I can plough through paperwork, (with my bouquet on my desk...no danger zone here today...). I can get my fabric library put back together, and I can do a myraid other things that are easily taken care of regardless of weather. Like sharing some important announcements with my peeps (that's you) about staying safe in your own indoor haven. For example:
    1. Be careful of lit candles indoors. d.s. ala coda....enough said. The obvious alternative is the faux-light-up candle. I have to admit that I don't care for those artificial candles sold by my alma mater and other TV shopping channels. They look cheap - and fake. I'm sorry. But they do. I say - go for the real thing when it comes to candles, but be mindful, cautious, careful and wise. Exercise excellent judgment...unlike me a month ago. Ask yourself - what can this candle damage - (beyond the extreme of burning down your house) and proceed with your well thought out plan from there.
    2. Window Safey Recall at the end of 2009. If you haven't heard yet - in December of 2009 the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the window blind industry recalled nearly 50 million Roman blinds & roller shades on the market. It was directed partciuarly to people who either have small children living in their homes or as freqeuent visitors. The recall is an effort to prevent the potential hazard of strangulation by way of looped bead chains on Roman shades, strings on the back of Roman shades and lifting loops on roll-up blinds (if they slide off.) For more information - as well as a free retro fit kit for use on older existing products - please visit www.windowcovers.org. And as ever - if doing a nursery, child's, tween's or teen's room - CHORDLESS treatments haver always been - and always remains - the way to go.

Make a Room Feel Larger

Everyone wants their home to feel warm and inviting but we also want the room to appear larger. As a rule, we recommend mounting window treatments several inches above the window. For example, say you have an 8' ceiling height and you mount your window treatment under your crown molding or just below the ceiling, not only will the room appear larger but the ceiling height will appear taller as well.Another mistake a homeowner might make would be to add a cornice with a straight bottom and then mount that cornice at the top of the window. Below I have created a rendering with our "Minutes Matter Studio" graphic design software to illustrate the different look achieved when the cornice is mounted near the crown molding or ceiling opposed to mounting at the top of the window. See how much taller the ceiling height appears and how much larger the room looks.

Here is another design tip when trying to make a ceiling look higher. Add a shape to the bottom of the cornice. By adding movement to the bottom of the cornice it can trick the eye into moving up and down so the eye does not stop at the longest point of the cornice.

You could also accomplish extra height with drapery panels and a decorative rod. Notice the difference when you mount the drapery rod at the top of the window or when you mount the rod under the crown molding or near the ceiling.

We recommend giving every room that extra lift! Would you like to see how new window treatments could change your room? As part of our service we create renderings to help our clients visualize how new window treatments will look on their windows.
